Debs Pageant: Jenny Moss

In Secrets of Truth & Beauty, Dara is a former child pageant star. So, in order to introduce you to the wonderful authors and characters of the 2009 Debutantes, I am hosting a Debs Pageant on my blog.

Today we have Jenny Moss and her book, Winnie’s War. First, a little background . . .

About Winnie’s War:
A debut novel set against the backdrop of the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.
Life in Winnie’s sleepy town of Coward Creek, Texas, is just fine for her. Although her troubled mother’s distant behavior has always worried Winnie, she’s plenty busy caring for her younger sisters, going to school, playing chess with Mr. Levy, and avoiding her testy grandmother. Plus, her sweetheart Nolan is always there to make her smile when she’s feeling low. But when the Spanish Influenza claims its first victim, lives are suddenly at stake, and Winnie has never felt so helpless. She must find a way to save the people she loves most, even if doing so means putting her own life at risk.
Released February 3rd, Winnie’s War is available now at your local bookstore, or through Amazon.
About Jenny Moss:
JENNY MOSS is a former NASA engineer. She earned a master’s degree in literature and taught writing as an adjunct at University of Houston-Clear Lake. Winnie’s War is her first novel. She lives with her two teenagers in Houston, Texas. For more about Jenny, visit her website.

And now the pageant . . .Character name: Winnie Grace
Age: Twelve years old
Brief Bio: Winnie lives with her coffin-building papa, troubled mama, cantankerous grandma, and two little sisters in a small Texas town during the 1918 influenza pandemic. She likes to play chess, visit with her sweetheart, read, and avoid the cemetery.

What is your talent? I worry about ghosts and dead people very well.

What will you wear for the evening dress competition?
I will wear my best dress, the one I wear to church. Or I might borrow a nicer one from my best friend Tillie.

Who is your escort? My sweetheart Nolan.

And for the interview portion . . .If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? Connection, instead of division

Thank you Jenny and Winnie!

Debs Pageant: Sarah MacLean

In Secrets of Truth & Beauty, Dara is a former child pageant star. So, in order to introduce you to the wonderful authors and characters of the 2009 Debutantes, I am hosting a Debs Pageant on my blog.

On Sunday, you met Megan Berry from Stacey Jay’s You Are So Undead to Me. Today we host Lady Alexandra Stafford from Sarah MacLean’s The Season. First, a little background:

About The Season

Seventeen-year-old Lady Alexandra Stafford doesn’t fit into the world of Regency London — she’s strong-willed, sharp-tongued, and she absolutely loathes dress fittings. Unfortunately, her mother has been waiting for years for Alex to be old enough to take part in the social whirlwind of a London Season so she can be married off to someone safe, respectable, wealthy, and almost certainly boring. But Alex is much more interested in adventure than romance.

Between sumptuous balls, lavish dinner parties and country weekends, Alex, along with her two best friends, Ella and Vivi, manages to get entangled in her biggest scrape yet. When the Earl of Blackmoor is killed in a puzzling accident, Alex decides to help his son, the brooding and devilishly handsome Gavin, uncover the truth. It’s a mystery brimming with espionage, murder, and suspicion. As she and Gavin grow closer, will Alex’s heart be stolen in the process?

Romance and danger fill the air, as this year’s Season begins!

Get The Season at your local bookstore or through Amazon.

About Sarah MacLean

Sarah MacLean is the author of THE SEASON, a YA novel coming in March 2009 from Scholastic. She grew up in Rhode Island, where she spent much of her free time bemoaning the fact that she was more than a century too late for own Season. Her unabashed addiction to historical fiction helped to earn her a degree in European History from Smith College before she moved to New York City to pursue a career in publishing. After receiving a Masters in Education from Harvard University, Sarah returned to New York, where she lives with her husband, their dog, and a ridiculously large collection of romance novels. She is currently working on a series of regency-set romances to be released in 2010 from Avon/HarperCollins. Visit her on her website.

And now, the pageant!

Character name: Lady Alexandra Stafford
Age: 17
Biography: Alex is a strong-willed, sharp-tongued young woman who simply doesn’t fit into the world of Regency London. The daughter of the wealthy Duke of Worthington, Alexandra has been extensively trained to have a remarkable, sure-to-result-in-marriage, first season. Much to her mother’s dismay, however, Alex has little interest in the seemingly useless trappings of a successful coming out and even less interest in the true measure of that success—a safe marriage to what her mother calls a “catch”…someone safe, dependable, and flat-out boring.

What is your talent?
I have three older brothers, all of whom are arrogant and insufferable. I’m very very good at setting them on their heels and reminding them that at least one woman in their life is able to resist them.

What will you wear for the evening dress competition?
I’m sure my mother will force me to suffer through the world’s longest dress fitting with Madame Fernaud for the pageant. It will probably be something ridiculously dramatic. I’d rather it were my favorite riding habit.

Who is your escort?
Gavin Sewell, Lord Blackmoor. My brothers’ best friend and the closest thing I’ve got to a fourth brother. He’s fairly insufferable as well, but recently…well, let’s just say that recently…he’s more unsettling than the other three combined.

And now the interview portion . . .If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
How about letting women into Parliament? Allowing us to have more relevance in the than as mothers and wives–perhaps as people with thoughts and minds and ideas? *sigh* It’s a silly idea, I know. How about just letting us have a few years of adventure before we have to settle down and be quiet, well-bred ladies?

Thank you Alex and Sarah!

Debs Pageant: Stacey Jay

Welcome to the Debs Pageant!

In Secrets of Truth & Beauty, Dara is a former child pageant star. So, in order to introduce you to the wonderful authors and characters of the 2009 Debutantes, I am hosting a Debs Pageant on my blog.

While I would like to bring these characters to life and have an actual pageant, broadcast on national television, and hosted by Mario Lopez. However, I have yet to perfect my Fictional Reality Maker Machine. So, instead I developed a short questionnaire that will replicate all the thrill and excitement of a real pageant.

Our first contestant is Megan Berry, heroine of Stacey Jay’s You Are So Undead to Me. First, a little background:

About You Are So Undead to Me
Megan Berry’s social life is so dead. Literally. Fifteen-year-old Megan Berry is a Zombie Settler by birth, which means she’s part-time shrink to a bunch of dead people. All Megan wants is to be normal–and go to homecoming. But someone in school is using black magic to turn average, angsty Undead into flesh-eating Zombies, and it’s looking like homecoming will turn out to be a very different kind of party–the bloody kind. You Are So Undead to Me was released on January 22nd, so you can buy it now at Amazon or your local bookstore.

About Stacey Jay
Stacey Jay is a workaholic with three pen names, four kids, and a decidedly macabre sense of humor. She loves zombies, creepies, crawlies, blood, guts, gore, and of course, romance. “You are So Undead to Me”, Stacey’s debut paranormal Young Adult Romance featuring Zombie Settler, Megan Berry will be a January 22nd 2009 release from Razorbill books. Find out more on her website.

Now the pageant!

Character name: Megan Berry
Age: 15
Biography: Megan enjoys hip hop dancing, hanging with her best friend Jess, and drooling over the hot Junior in her chem class…or at least she did until her powers for Settling the dead returned just before her sixteenth birthday. Now she spends her time talking Unsettled zombies back into their graves and fighting off black magically raised corpses with a hunger for human flesh.

What is your talent?
I’ve been dancing practically since I could walk, but I’m guessing zombie Settling would get me more points for originality. Unfortunately, that’s supposed to be kept top secret from the human world. (This is a human pageant right?)

What will you wear for the evening dress competition?
Something black, strapless, and slinky with shorts underneath, just in case. When zombies attack and ass-kicking ensues, I prefer not to flash the audience.

Who is your escort?
Um…who all is going to read this? I don’t want to just say someone’s name and assume he’s going to agree and then have him say no after the entire world has read this and seen me make a complete fool out of myself. So…yeah…can I just say TBA on that?

And now the interview portion . . .What color best represents you and why?
If I were a color, I would be the many varied hues of a bruise. Purple in the center, black near the edges, with a sickly yellow surrounding, all showcased against corpse white flesh because…um…I don’t know why. That answer just sounded better in my head than “red because it rocks”.

Gah! I’m not very good at this pageant stuff, am I? I should probably take rain check on the whole thing. I’m still stressed out about the escort question and I don’t have the chest to hold up the strapless dress and I look like an abused raccoon when I try to put on eyeliner and this seems like the kind of thing that requires eyeliner so…yeah…thanks but…um…yeah…

Thank you Megan and Stacey!
